| 25th July 2009 – Sri Lankan Justice Ministry’s parliamentary consultative committee has taken up the matter of remand prisoners being allegedly stripped naked when they return to the Welikada prison after attending courts. TNA members N. Sri Kantha and Sivanathan Kishor made these allegations at a committee meeting chaired by Justice Minister Milinda Moragoda on Thursday. Mr. Sri Kantha said it was detestable, demeaning and unjustifiable to subject prisoners to such treatment even though a few cases were reported of the prisoners smuggling various illegal items such as heroin and ganja.
He alleged that no part of the body was spared during the search. Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Bhaila who denied the allegation got into a heated argument with Mr. Kishor but TNA MPs even vowed to bring affidavits from prisoners to prove the demeaning kind of search they were subjected to. |
